Time Trends in Physical Activity in the State of São Paulo, Brazil: 2002–2008

The role of physically activity at improving physical and mental health is extensively documented.Despite this evidence, populations are still below physical activity goals worldwide. Recognition of physical inactivity as a population-wide problem has led to programs and policies to propose interventions aimed at changing the behavior of entire populations, as well as motivated the World Health Organization to create the Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity, and Health.

The role of partnerships in promoting physical activity: the experience of Agita São Paulo

Strategic partnership is a logical approach to face some of the public health problems. However, its application is somewhat more complex. In this paper our experience with three networks (Agita São Paulo, Physical Activity Network of Americas, and Agita Mundo Network) was described. In the case of Agita São Paulo even the name was a consequence of a partnership with a marketing company, and is an idiomatic expression that means much more than just to move your body. It also means to move psychologically and socially, with the concept of “active citizenship”.

Public Policy Actions Needed to Promote Physical Activity

Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and strategies to increase activity levels are as important to population health as smoking cessation, cholesterol control, or preventing obesity. The World Health Organization has identified that governments and non-government agencies have a central role in the creation of environments that facilitate physical activity changes by individuals, families, and communities. This article describes recent policy-related programs at a largescale or national level to promote physical activity. This is proposed within a framework that codifies evidence-based policy actions, based on the International Physical Activity Recommendations. Examples are provided of current policy actions from diverse settings around the world. Finally, future policy directions needed for the promotion of physical activity are discussed and related research needs identified.

How many steps/day are enough? For older adults and special populations

Older adults and special populations (living with disability and/or chronic illness that may limit mobility and/or physical endurance) can benefit from practicing a more physically active lifestyle, typically by increasing ambulatory activity. Step counting device (accelerometers and pedometers) offer an opportunity to monitor daily ambulatory activity; however, an appropriate translation of public health guidelines in terms of steps/day is unknown. Therefore this review was conducted to translate public health recommendations in terms of steps/day.
